Dublin City Council began offering free senior fitness programs on July 1 across multiple venues, with morning sessions now running in five locations every weekday.

Older adults in the city face higher rates of isolation and reduced mobility after the winter months, and council data shows that structured group activity can cut falls by up to 23 percent when participants attend at least twice weekly. The timing coincides with the launch of the council’s updated Active Dublin plan, which allocates €180,000 this year specifically for over-60s classes rather than general recreation.

Sessions at Phoenix Park and Grand Canal Dock

Classes take place at the Phoenix Park visitor centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am, where instructors lead chair-based strength work followed by a short outdoor walk along the main avenue. In the south docklands, the same program operates at the Grand Canal Dock community centre on Mondays and Wednesdays, using the indoor hall for balance drills before moving to the waterside path for light cardio. Both sites supply mats and resistance bands at no charge, and participants only need to bring comfortable shoes and water.

Attendance records from the first week of July show 312 people registered across the two sites, with 68 percent returning for a second session. The council tracks progress through simple pre- and post-class mobility tests rather than weigh-ins, keeping the focus on function instead of weight loss.

How to register and what comes next

Residents can sign up by calling the Active Dublin office at 01 222 2222 or by visiting the desk at any Dublin City Council library branch before the next class. Places fill quickly, with priority given to those who have not attended in the past six months. The programs run through December, with an option to continue into the new year once winter timetables are confirmed.
