Dublin Residents Launch Neighbourhood Walking Groups for Fitness and Community
Dublin residents are turning to local streets and parks to launch neighbourhood walking groups that combine fitness with social connection.
How we reported this
More than 40 people joined the first session of a new walking group that launched last month along the Grand Canal in Portobello.
Wellness participation has risen sharply in Dublin since early 2025, with city data showing increased demand for low-cost group activities amid ongoing economic pressures on households. Neighbourhood walking groups fit this pattern because they require minimal equipment and can start from any residential street without booking fees or travel.
Organisers in Ranelagh used the local community centre on Charleston Road as their base point, while a separate group in Clontarf meets at the seafront promenade near St. Lawrence Road. Both drew initial members through simple flyers left at the Tesco on Moore Street and the SuperValu in Drumcondra.
Setting the route and schedule
Successful groups pick a fixed loop of three to five kilometres that starts and ends at the same spot. The Portobello example follows the canal towpath to the Charlemont bridge and back, a route that takes 45 minutes at a steady pace. Sessions run twice weekly on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 and Saturday mornings at 9:00, avoiding peak traffic times on nearby Rathmines Road.
Getting the first members and keeping costs low
A 2025 survey by the Irish Sports Council found that 62 percent of new walking groups in Dublin formed through word of mouth in the first three weeks. Organisers report that posting a single notice on the neighbourhood Facebook page and asking two friends to bring one person each produces enough participants to begin. No formal registration is required, though some groups collect a voluntary €2 contribution per session to cover printed route maps.
Start with a short test walk this weekend, confirm a meeting point, and send a single message to ten neighbours. The next session can grow from there.
